Sonia Ragan

Sonia Ragan is a professional dance teacher, competitor, and adjudicator. She has won major titles for various championships, and is certified as an instructor in four unique styles. In addition to her work as an instructor and choreographer, Sonia has done television modeling for celebrity stylists and other shows. She is a dedicated volunteer for various associations.

Sonia was born in Boone NC and grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains where she began the discipline of Martial Arts at the age of 8. Sonia's dance career emerged when she was 19 after moving to Sarasota FL where she studied under Blackpool Champion Burmah Smith.

Sonia has been teaching and competing professionally for 20 years. She is certified in all four styles of dance: American Smooth, American Rhythm, International Latin, and International Standard. Sonia is also available to adjudicate. Early in her career she won two major titles, Fred Astaire National Rising Star American Smooth and National Rising Star American Rhythm Champion. Upon entering the independent circuit Sonia has acquired the following titles: Florida State Open American Smooth Champion, United States Rising Star American Smooth finalist, United States Open 9-Dance Finalist, and the World Dance Council's World Pro-Am Youth Champion.


Sonia's choreography experience includes: Professional, Amateur, and Pro-Am showcase, competition and theatrical routines. Sonia also choreographed and performed for The Circus Sarasota where she integrated Ballroom and Latin dancing with jugglers and trapeze artists.

Sonia recently judged and performed at the Third Annual Costa Rica Open Dance Festival. This is part of an effort to introduce the five international standard dances which will help make ballroom dancing a formal sport in Costa Rica.

Sonia volunteers for local community organizations donating teaching hours to Dancing for Education, Take Stock in Children, and The Community Aids Network's "Dancing with the Stars". She is a mentor for the dance program for The Phenoix Academy in Sarasota. And she volunteers for the American Red Cross in Bonita Springs Dancing With The Stars fundraiser.

Sonia has appeared on National television shows: Home Shopping Network and NBC's Good Day morning show.
